In the United States, there are 7.7 million black children being educated in our school system. The news you hear about black males is normally negative regarding their education, especially at the middle school level. Using narrative inquiry, my research study gave middle school black boys a chance to share their stories regarding what has made them successful in their science and math classes, including the type of support they have had to help them be successful. The findings and implications from this study will enable presentation participants to develop culturally relevant pedagogy and protocols to support black boys in general.

Join us in figuring out how to unlock the “escape box” to determine what is causing a waste treatment system to fail. You will solve puzzles, locate hints, analyze data, and use the combined clues to solve the challenge (with prizes). In the process, you will learn about the science of waste fermentation, and the role of phosphorus and nitrogen in food waste. Be prepared to engage in serious problem solving in a fun environment.
Dig into some snacks, cold beverages, and professional development as we explore differentiation with the new North Carolina science standards. This session will arm you with strategies to differentiate instruction so that all students can effectively engage with the new standards. Explore ways to tailor instruction so that diverse learners can apply science and engineering practices, foster deeper understanding, and develop skills across all ability levels. The session emphasizes practical tools and resources for accessing the SEPs and NC science standards by creating inclusive, hands-on learning environments.

Our learners are more diverse than ever and yet for many of us, our curricular materials have remained unchanged and uninspired. How can we reshape our curricula to be more culturally and historically responsive for today’s learners? Join this session to learn about and explore the five (5) pursuits for culturally and historically responsive teaching: identity, skills, intellect, criticality, and joy. In this workshop participants are invited to bring a lesson plan or instructional activity to critique and improve for an increasingly diverse student audience. Together we’ll examine the five (5) pursuits, discuss what they look like in practice, and leverage the strengths of our session community to develop more culturally relevant student learning experiences that spark joy for our learners. Participants will walk away with a better understanding of CHRT and a draft of a culturally relevant learning activity to use in their classrooms.
