Learning from Nature: STEAM Investigations for the Classroom
Friday November 8, 2024 8:00am - 8:50am EST
Knowledge of biological systems can be linked with the practical application of designing products, addressing environmental concerns and demystifying science to catch the imagination of young learners. Technologies inspired by nature (biomimicry) and the intentional design of safer products and processes (green chemistry) provide an avenue for teachers to introduce a range of STEAM concepts in a dynamic investigative manner while weaving literacy and art connections across their science curriculum. In this hands-on workshop you will explore practical tips for implementing open-access units covering engineering design, animal adaptations, and properties of matter. By using inexpensive and easily accessible materials, learn how these NGSS-designed lessons can be used to challenge and inspire your students. Each lesson puts students in the role of the sustainable scientist while integrating Common Core Language Arts and Math standards.

Leveraging New Science Standards to Increase Environmental Literacy: Data and Strategies
Friday November 8, 2024 1:40pm - 2:30pm EST
How can we drive the greatest impact from the new science standards to boost environmental literacy for students? A multi-year survey of environmental education (EE) in the Southeast drew data from 1400+ stakeholders to identify gaps and barriers to outdoor and EE access. The analysis highlights specific challenges as well as opportunities to enhance place-based learning across the curriculum. In this session, discover ways to integrate EE across the standards, include SEP, and make the most of local EE resources for student success PK-12.
