Can you see me? An exploration of successful middle school Black Boys in STEM courses
Thursday November 7, 2024 8:30am - 9:20am EST
In the United States, there are 7.7 million black children being educated in our school system. The news you hear about black males is normally negative regarding their education, especially at the middle school level. Using narrative inquiry, my research study gave middle school black boys a chance to share their stories regarding what has made them successful in their science and math classes, including the type of support they have had to help them be successful. The findings and implications from this study will enable presentation participants to develop culturally relevant pedagogy and protocols to support black boys in general.

Real Teaching with Real Data
Thursday November 7, 2024 2:30pm - 3:20pm EST
Dive into the world of authentic scientific inquiry. This hands-on session leverages public health data from NC State's Center for Human Health and the Environment to empower educators with practical strategies for teaching with real research data. Discover how to guide students through investigating complex datasets, formulating their own questions, and drawing compelling conclusions through the lens of PFAS water contamination data. Whether you're looking to enhance data literacy or inspire a new generation of critical thinkers and data scientists, this workshop provides valuable tools and insights for integrating real-world data into your curriculum. Join us to transform data into a dynamic teaching tool that builds student agency and sparks curiosity in your students!

Making Connections between Science, Math, and the SEPs
Friday November 8, 2024 8:00am - 8:50am EST
The new NC science standards leverage science and engineering practices (SEPs). Modeling is the central practice of the SEPs and the process of incorporating them into courses can feel rather daunting. Where to start? What are the expectations for students? Join us to learn how to take one of your lessons and make it even more engaging using our shared strategies. Participants will leave with ready-to-go lessons they can implement into their classrooms.

Science Teacher Leader Group: Collaborate, Create, and Lead
Friday November 8, 2024 10:40am - 11:30am EST
During this session, we will engage in quick, low-cost science activities that incorporates the science and engineering practices with content to focus our discussion on identifying important shifts teachers need to make with the new standards, as well as resources we have available and need to support implementation. Based on these ideas, we will form affinity groups of science teacher leaders who want to work on specific issues surfaced during the academic year in virtual PDSA style working groups. Our intention would be to come back together at NCSTA in 2025 ready to share the resources we developed.
