Science and Engineering Practices and the Science Teacher Leader Group
Thursday November 7, 2024 1:30pm - 2:20pm EST
During this session, we will engage in quick, low-cost science activities that incorporates the science and engineering practices with content to focus our discussion on identifying important shifts teachers need to make with the new standards, as well as resources we have available and need to support implementation. Based on these ideas, we will form affinity groups of science teacher leaders who want to work on specific issues surfaced during the academic year in virtual PDSA style working groups. Our intention would be to come back together at NCSTA in 2025 ready to share the resources we developed.

Does your curriculum spark joy? Exploring the Five Pursuits for Culturally and Historically Responsive Teaching
Thursday November 7, 2024 2:30pm - 3:20pm EST
Our learners are more diverse than ever and yet for many of us, our curricular materials have remained unchanged and uninspired. How can we reshape our curricula to be more culturally and historically responsive for today’s learners? Join this session to learn about and explore the five (5) pursuits for culturally and historically responsive teaching: identity, skills, intellect, criticality, and joy. In this workshop participants are invited to bring a lesson plan or instructional activity to critique and improve for an increasingly diverse student audience. Together we’ll examine the five (5) pursuits, discuss what they look like in practice, and leverage the strengths of our session community to develop more culturally relevant student learning experiences that spark joy for our learners. Participants will walk away with a better understanding of CHRT and a draft of a culturally relevant learning activity to use in their classrooms.
