Can you see me? An exploration of successful middle school Black Boys in STEM courses
Thursday November 7, 2024 8:30am - 9:20am EST
In the United States, there are 7.7 million black children being educated in our school system. The news you hear about black males is normally negative regarding their education, especially at the middle school level. Using narrative inquiry, my research study gave middle school black boys a chance to share their stories regarding what has made them successful in their science and math classes, including the type of support they have had to help them be successful. The findings and implications from this study will enable presentation participants to develop culturally relevant pedagogy and protocols to support black boys in general.

One Stop Shop "Deep Time & Fossils Toolbox"
Thursday November 7, 2024 2:30pm - 3:20pm EST
This is a condensed version of the Deep Time Toolbox workshop developed by AppState’s Geology Department which will include alignment to the new standards. Participants will try hands-on activities around geologic time, extinction event clues and fossils (including ID and fossilization methods). Materials are geared towards Gr. 6-8 but 4th grade teachers would also find them useful with some modification. Classroom kits and fossil samples given out on a first come first served basis.

Forest fires, wildfire smoke, and health: Exploring curriculum connections
Thursday November 7, 2024 3:30pm - 4:20pm EST
NC communities are increasingly encountering wildfire smoke and reduced air quality from forest fires burning near and far. In this session, we’ll explore curriculum connections and discuss strategies and tools for engaging students in learning about NC’s growing wildland urban interface and increased susceptibility to climate-driven wildfires. We will also explore the range of solutions that can be implemented to prevent wildfires and protect public health from exposure to wildfire smoke.

Fire as Phenomena
Friday November 8, 2024 8:00am - 8:50am EST
Every Campfire has a master who lights it, keeps it burning, and puts it out. Industrial facilities use boilers to make the things we need, and land managers use fire to protect and rejuvenate the forest. But fire has a dark side of soot, air pollution, and danger. We will look at fire through chemistry, math, and energy using hand-on demonstrations, chemistry and fire.

Improved -- & Improving -- Climate Modeling
Friday November 8, 2024 2:40pm - 3:30pm EST
Appropriate to any audience, this is not-your-usual presentation; recommended read/review ahead, from a not-your-usual blog: (2023) Climate Uncertainty and Risk: Table of Contents https://judithcurry.com/2023/03/11/ “This book is for people that are willing to think and challenge their preconceived notions about climate change.” You’re right: it’s complex. But we’ll nug it down to some basics with plenty of time for questions & discussion. (Handouts, too)
