playing god? podcast
Thursday November 7, 2024 8:30am - 9:20am EST
Life-and-death dilemmas. New medical technologies. Controversial treatments. In playing god?, a new podcast produced by the Berman Institute of Bioethics, we hear from the patients whose lives were transformed—and sometimes saved—by medical innovations and the bioethicists who help guide complex decisions. Come engage, explore, learn, and plan ways to utilize these resources in your science classrooms!

The “Great Escape” Box Challenge: Analyze Clues to Solve the Environmental Mystery
Thursday November 7, 2024 9:30am - 10:20am EST
Join us in figuring out how to unlock the “escape box” to determine what is causing a waste treatment system to fail. You will solve puzzles, locate hints, analyze data, and use the combined clues to solve the challenge (with prizes). In the process, you will learn about the science of waste fermentation, and the role of phosphorus and nitrogen in food waste. Be prepared to engage in serious problem solving in a fun environment.

Energy Literacy: Thinking Critically about Energy Resources
Thursday November 7, 2024 2:30pm - 3:20pm EST
Whether students are learning about renewable or nonrenewable energy resources, the Switch Classroom curriculum clearly and effectively identifies the trade-offs of using each energy resource. Through an unbiased approach to energy literacy, Switch classroom teaches about energy resources, consumption, conservation, and energy use around the world. Switch Classroom offers a wide variety of classroom resources from video lessons, hands-on labs, and data analysis activities that will engage students in thinking critically about energy.

EnviroSmart Schools: The Understory Project
Thursday November 7, 2024 3:30pm - 4:20pm EST
In many areas across the country school campuses are the best opportunity to optimize natural systems where green space is needed most. The Catawba College Center for the Environment would like to share an educational model that focuses on the greening of school campuses to foster environmental literacy, native biodiversity, climate resilience, and healthier communities. Participants will experience Project Understory investigations that are interdisciplinary, with a focus on the new science standards.

Learning from Nature: STEAM Investigations for the Classroom
Friday November 8, 2024 8:00am - 8:50am EST
Knowledge of biological systems can be linked with the practical application of designing products, addressing environmental concerns and demystifying science to catch the imagination of young learners. Technologies inspired by nature (biomimicry) and the intentional design of safer products and processes (green chemistry) provide an avenue for teachers to introduce a range of STEAM concepts in a dynamic investigative manner while weaving literacy and art connections across their science curriculum. In this hands-on workshop you will explore practical tips for implementing open-access units covering engineering design, animal adaptations, and properties of matter. By using inexpensive and easily accessible materials, learn how these NGSS-designed lessons can be used to challenge and inspire your students. Each lesson puts students in the role of the sustainable scientist while integrating Common Core Language Arts and Math standards.

Leveraging New Science Standards to Increase Environmental Literacy: Data and Strategies
Friday November 8, 2024 1:40pm - 2:30pm EST
How can we drive the greatest impact from the new science standards to boost environmental literacy for students? A multi-year survey of environmental education (EE) in the Southeast drew data from 1400+ stakeholders to identify gaps and barriers to outdoor and EE access. The analysis highlights specific challenges as well as opportunities to enhance place-based learning across the curriculum. In this session, discover ways to integrate EE across the standards, include SEP, and make the most of local EE resources for student success PK-12.
