Nancy Cattrell brings over 16 years of experience in science education to her role at Apex Friendship High School where she teaches all the forensic science courses using project-based learning. In forensic science, she works with the SBI, State Crime Lab, WCU’s Forensic Anthropology department, and the FBI to bring in meaningful guest speakers to connect content to future college and career options. She also serves as the director of the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program of over 100 members, advises the local chapter of the Science National Honor Society (SNHS) which has almost 140 members, and has acted as a mentor teacher for 8 years at AFHS. Nancy took on the role of advisor for the Patriot Pals program, which enables AFHS students to volunteer at AFES. WISE students attend multiple events that focus on networking, mentoring, financial literacy, and college/career options in STEM. Also, Nancy coordinates the SNHS to plan and facilitate the annual STEM Night at AFES. Nancy also serves as a building expert in Canvas by assisting teachers with the implementation of Canvas and providing professional development. In addition to these roles, Nancy is also part of the school’s first response team to ensure the safety and well-being of all persons at AFHS. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Business Management and Animal Science from North Carolina State University and a Master's of Education in Science Education from East Carolina University. In her spare time, Nancy is committed to supporting public education to ensure all students receive the necessary support to have fulfilling lives after high school. She is currently a North Carolina Science Leadership Fellow for the 2024-2026 cohort through the North Carolina Science Leadership Association. She received The Nancy Wynne High School Distinguished Service Award, North Carolina Science Teacher Association in 2023, was a finalist for the Athena Leadership Award in 2023, and has been a finalist for the Burroughs Wellcome Fund’s Career Award for STEM Teachers in 2022 and 2020. She was a Kenan Fellow through NC State in 2015. She also enjoys sewing, cosplay, and playing with her 7-year-old daughter.
