Can you see me? An exploration of successful middle school Black Boys in STEM courses

In the United States, there are 7.7 million black children being educated in our school system. The news you hear about black males is normally negative regarding their education, especially at the middle school level. Using narrative inquiry, my research study gave middle school black boys a chance to share their stories regarding what has made them successful in their science and math classes, including the type of support they have had to help them be successful. The findings and implications from this study will enable presentation participants to develop culturally relevant pedagogy and protocols to support black boys in general.

Join us in figuring out how to unlock the “escape box” to determine what is causing a waste treatment system to fail. You will solve puzzles, locate hints, analyze data, and use the combined clues to solve the challenge (with prizes). Have you ever wondered what science lessons looked like in this part of the world before Western leaders took a hold of them? Did you ever imagine our Native lessons would have a place in your classroom? I present my research on how we can indigenize science education in a way that is respectful to the history and context of the land, and our relationships with it. We tend to think of indigenous studies as an anthropology or history field, but I intend to share why I believe it belongs in the science classroom. We will find that indigenous studies are interdisciplinary by nature, and learn about how the knowledge and practice of Native American pedagogy may benefit our students and ourselves as teachers of these lands.

PFAS are a class of thousands of persistent chemicals used in the production of waterproof, stainproof, and nonstick items. These lessons, co-created by teachers and scientists, use real-world data collected from water and aquatic organisms in NC. Lessons are aligned with the new NC science standards in Biology and Earth Environmental (as well as AP Biology and APES).

A multi-year survey of environmental education (EE) in the Southeast drew data from 1400+ stakeholders to identify gaps and barriers to outdoor and EE access. The analysis highlights specific challenges as well as opportunities to enhance place-based learning across the curriculum. In this session, discover ways to integrate EE across the standards, include SEP, and make the most of local EE resources for student success PK-12.

Using Algae Models & Assays to Illuminate the Interplay between Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration for Students!

In this session, instructors will use 2D models of photosynthesis and cellular respiration to conduct tracking of carbon molecules and apply this information to a hands-on assay using freshwater algae to indirectly qualify carbon movement. They will then develop protocols that quantifies the qualitative changes witnessed (via carbon dioxide tracking) under a variety of environmental conditions. Collectively, participants will use the sum of their experiences to develop and explain an ecological model of carbon cycling.
